Documented Cemeteries

Copiah County Historical & Genealogical Committee has taken on an enormous job!
We're committed to locating and documenting every cemetery in the county.  According to our latest list, there are approximately 300 that are known of throughout the 777 square miles of dry land in this county.  Although, it seems like weekly, I run across someone that knows about yet another cemetery somewhere in the woods that they remember running across once.  But that's okay, one day, we hope to get them all!!
After searching for my own family roots for the last three decades, I know how difficult it is to find cemetery records, especially ones that are kept up to date.  When I joined the CCHGS and discovered this project, my friend, Lynn and I jumped on it.

As we collect the information, CCHGS plans on making it available to be public in the form of CD's. We plan on putting approximately 50 cemeteries on each CD, hopefully we'll have the first one ready to sell at the 2008 Crystal Springs Tomato Festival.

We also plan on selling the CD's through this website once they're ready. Any money made from the sales will be used toward the upkeep of the abandoned and forgotten cemeteries in the county.

If you'd like to help in some form, we'd definitely appreciate it!

GREAT NEWS!!!!!

We've got our first Copiah County Cemetery CD published!

Our first CD is now for sale!

Tricia Nelson, president of CCHGS now has our first 50 documented cemeteries on a CD, and has it ready for the public for $25*.  This is a really great asset for any geneaologist's library!  The way that it has been put together makes it easy for anyone to find information in a variety of ways.  It can be searched by person, cemetery, or just about any way you can imagine.

We had hoped to have this CD ready for sale at the 2008 Crystal Springs Tomato Festival, but it just wasn't to be.  But it was well worth the wait!  We are in the process of setting up a way that we can sell the CDs online, and when it is ready, I will provide a link here on this site.  In the meantime, if you would like to purchase the CD, you can email me, Rita@CopiahCemeteries.com, or email Tricia, lmnelson10@aol.com.

I am in the process of redesigning this site where it will be set up more like the way the CD's are designed.  I will have information about the cemeteries that are listed on each CD, and information that will be helpful to the people that are searching for Copiah County ancestors.

Now that we have succeeded in getting the first 50 documented, we are now working on the next 50.  Again, if there is anyone that would like to help up tromp through the woods here, please, please, PLEASE let me know!  :-)

*Please remember, CCHGS is a non-profit organization, and all money that is made from these CDs will go to preservation and upkeep of abandoned cemeteries in Copiah County!

Documenting cemeteries is more than just paperwork!  Although we're counting on the help of lists that were made by people before us, like Miss Francis Cook.  Miss Cook tromped through here in the 40's and 50's and documented a lot of our cemeteries and made genealogical searchers lives a lot easier.

Hopefully, we can do the same. One day we hope to have all of our information online and we'll be able to make finding everyone's ancestors a little easier.

By "documenting" we mean that we're personally visiting each grave in each cemetery; taking a photo of it and giving it an identification number.  We're also making a note of the location of each cemetery by using a GPS locator. This way they can always be found again.

We would love to hear from you. If you know of a cemetery that we haven't listed, or if you have information about one that we've documented, please let us know.

Unfortunately, at the time, we don't have the resources to do individual searches for the public, so please don't ask.
